Remember, Celebrate, Act: A Mission Still to Fulfill
On January 13, 2012 over 100 people gathered in the second floor rotunda of the Nebraska State Capitol to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate the achievements of Nebraskans who carry on his mission of equality and service.
First Lady Sally Ganem introduced the winners of the 2012 Essay Contest and the group posed for photos after each had read their essay. McDonald’s is the sponsor of the essay contest.
Dr. David Ray Montague, Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas Little Rock gave the keynote address.
In a Tribute to Justice, Equity, and Human Dignity four awards were presented at the ceremony.
The Richard Allen Shepard Community Youth Foundation received the Hugh and Dr. Leola Bullock “Equity/Advocacy” Award.
Mr. Wayne Svoboda received the Hughes and Lela Shanks “Lifetime” Award.
Mr. James Jackson received the Dr. Matthew O. Ricketts “Trailblazer” Award.
Mrs. Coleen Seng received the Humanitarian Award.

The architect who designed the Nebraska State Capitol was Bertram Goodhue. The thematic program of the Capitol was developed by Dr. Hartley Burr Alexander. Sculptor for the Capitol was Lee Lawrie, and Hildreth Meiere designed all the floor and ceiling mosaics. The building was constructed over a ten year period in four building phases. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1932. Total cost of the building was just under $10 million.
